African Games: Nigeria, Uganda battle for cricket bronze

As the women's cricket competition at the 2017 African Games in Ghana comes to a thrilling conclusion at the Achimota Cricket Oval in Accra on Wednesday (today), Nigeria will square off against Uganda, which is ranked 18th.

To set up the match, Uganda lost by 50 runs against South Africa and the Female Yellow Greens lost by five wickets against Zimbabwe in the semi-finals. This means that the top two teams on the continent will also compete for silver and gold.

"I have to thank my comrades for their up to date efforts. Thus far, everything we have done, both individually and collectively, has kept us in the competition. Blessing Etim, the captain of the female Yellow Greens, stated, "We will return stronger to play on Wednesday (today)."

Consy Aweko, the captain of Uganda, broke her career record for 100 wickets in T20i, and stated that she is hoping to win bronze as a consolation prize.

"We gave up a lot of runs, but we accomplished our goals. They took a chance and prevailed. We still have tomorrow for my hitters to come show us what they can do to win us a medal," Aweko stated following their South Africa defeat.

Uganda and Nigeria recently faced each other in a T20 World Cup qualifier in December, with the Victoria Pearls emerging victorious by six wickets.

The final between South Africa and Zimbabwe will take place at 3pm Nigerian time, with the Nigerian-Uganda game scheduled to begin at 10am.
