Sacrificial Leaders Needed’, Obi Faults N15bn Allocation For VP’s Residence

The Labour Party's (LP) nominee for president in 2023, Peter Obi, has criticized a N15 billion budget for building a new home for the vice president (VP) of the country.

The former governor of Anambra State stated that for Nigeria to thrive, its leaders must be prepared to make sacrifices in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"We need leaders who are compassionate and prepared to make sacrifices in order to advance and improve society as a whole. In his writing, he stated, "Such kind and thrifty leaders are crucial in our journey to the New Nigeria."

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister announced last Wednesday that N15 billion will be allocated for the building of the vice president's new home. The minister defended the FCT's N61.5 billion 2023 supplemental budget in front of a House of Representatives committee.

In his Monday article, Obi questioned what was wrong with the nation.

"Given the several significant issues confronting our country, the recent revelation of a N15 billion budgetary provision for the building of a new mansion for the Vice President is both alarming and depressing.

Part of the tweet said, "The Vice President already has a residence because the sum of N2.5 billion was recently approved in the Supplementary Budget for the restoration of his property in Abuja.

"Once more, I heard during the budget presentation that N3 billion will be used to renovate the Vice President's Lagos home.

"If we add up all these amounts, we would have allocated N20.5 billion for the Vice President's residence during this crucial period when we are not only the world's center of poverty but also see an increase in the number of impoverished individuals, with a great number of Nigerians struggling to find food on a daily basis. Our healthcare facilities have failed, and the rate of unemployment is through the roof.
