We’re raising children wrong, says Toyin Abraham citing Oyo varsity incident
Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has called on parents and guardians to give priority to teaching the next generation the virtues of decency, civility, and kindness.
Abraham stressed the critical role that parenting plays in forming children's characters in a statement published on her Instagram profile on Monday. Abraham expressed concern over recent occurrences involving disrespectful behaviour from young kids.
"I feel compelled to share this sincere message with every parent and guardian in light of recent observations and contacts on the internet. She claimed that there needs to be a significant focus on the calibre of children being raised nowadays.
Abraham bemoaned the alarming trend that kids are starting to see civility and respect as responsibilities. Our children today view decency and manners as a burden. What is our reaction when we read some of the things young people say about adults online?

"How do we feel about some of the things that young people say to adults online while claiming to be 'woke' or taking a 'no tolerance' stance?" she asked.
The actress acknowledged the dramatic difference between the upbringing she had and the way children are treated now, drawing on personal experiences.
The way we are raising our children now is not how many of us were raised. We feel that times have changed, so we are treating them like children. But that is hardly a justification for raising rude kids in different eras.

Abraham highlighted the value of teaching thankfulness and respect, even for one's parents. She said, "There are still things we wouldn't tell our parents, not out of fear, but out of respect, despite our age and blessings."
Abraham emphasised the grave repercussions of a lack of moral principles and home training by citing the recent tragic event at Ajayi Crowther University, where a student was killed in an act of mob justice.
The terrible incident that occurred at Ajayi Crowther University recently, in which students murdered a fellow student in the name of jungle justice, brings to light the grave repercussions of moral principles and home training being lacking. It does not justify sacrificing the life of another individual, even if theft did occur, the speaker stated.
While acknowledging the difficulties in raising disciplined children, Abraham focused on the long-term advantages of establishing virtues like hard work, kindness, responsibility, respect, and civility.
Our upbringing instilled virtues such as responsibility, kindness, respect, courtesy, and hard work. We are appreciative of our parents today for establishing these principles in us, even though we may not have like the punishment at the time," she said.
The actress underlined once more how parents may contribute to the development of a country by producing admirable citizens.
It is our duty as a nation-builder to produce the next generation of admirable people. Once more, happy Children's Day. May God guard our children, keep us safe from all harm, and give us a magnificent celebration that the kids will never forget.
