Yuletide: Police bans firecrackers in Delta

The use and sale of firecrackers, knockouts, fireworks, and other pyrotechnics are prohibited in the state by the Delta State Police Command.

The action was taken because it constituted a threat to state security and should be avoided, according to state Commissioner of Police CP Wale Abass.

This was stated in a statement released on Friday by DSP Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the Command, copies of which were provided to reporters in Warri.

"CP Wale Abass warns that using fireworks (knockouts) can result in annoyances, which further causes unnecessary worry, panic, and disturbance of public order," the statement stated in part.
It went on, "Moreover, he (CP) cautioned against the dangerous effects of its use, pointing out that it could create distractions that could allow criminals to carry out their crimes and put locals in danger.
"The CP issued a severe warning, stating that anyone found in violation of the ban—whether a dealer or a resident—will be dealt with harshly by the law.

In light of this, parents and guardians are asked to keep an eye on their children and limit their use of knockouts over the holidays.

"CP Wale Abass reiterates the Command's commitment and willingness to protect residents' lives and property during the Yuletide season and beyond, urging the good people of Delta to be vigilant and security conscious.

"The good people of Delta State are wished a crime-free Christmas and New Year celebration in advance by the Commissioner of Police, on behalf of the officers and men of the Command."
