‘Let My Ministers Breathe And Do Their Jobs,’ Tinubu Tells Lawmakers
The heads of ministries, departments, and agencies should be cautious when calling them before parliamentary committees, President Bola Tinubu has urged members of the House of Representatives and Senate to do.
Speaking on Wednesday at the House of Representatives' breaking of the Ramadan fast in Abuja alongside Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and other House leadership, the President stated that while oversight is necessary to uphold accountability and transparency in governance, calling in too many officials at once can cause disruptions and impede the provision of services to the public.
He pleaded with lawmakers to use caution when carrying out their supervisory duties.
Ministers and agency heads have been called before various committees, which I have been observing. I've appealed to the Speaker to give the underprivileged some air. Give this job to these folks. We do not mean to imply that you lack influence. We are not arguing that you can't correct your error. But think about what each agency's staff members' main duties are to you and the country as a whole, or the duties of the Central Bank Governor, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, and the Minister of Finance.
We might move the parliamentary sitting throughout the night if they become sidetracked or uneasy. We have to learn to make room for one another. This is a request for you. In certain cases, see if you can accept representatives or even documentations, the President said.
He added that the nation would pay tribute to the 17 service members who lost their lives in Delta State on Thursday.
