141 terror cases, 214 kidnappings recorded in eight weeks – IG
Olukayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, announced on Thursday that during the previous eight weeks, the police had received reports of 141 terror incidents, 214 kidnappings, and 537 homicide cases.
Egbetokun stated that 401 abduction victims were freed, while 3,685 suspects were arrested for their roles in a number of crimes.
While answering inquiries from media at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, located in Louis Edet House, Abuja, Egbetokun made these remarks.
"I am happy to report a substantial advancement following our last conference on February 8, 2024, driven by the execution of diverse strategies aimed at mitigating the escalating trend of criminal activities across the nation," he stated.
Over the course of the last eight weeks, there have been 141 incidents of terrorism or secessionist attacks, 537 murder cases, 126 armed robberies, 214 kidnapping cases, and 39 cases of illegal firearm ownership.
Additionally, the Nigeria Police Force apprehended 3,685 people for their involvement in a variety of crimes during the time under review; 401 victims of kidnapping were freed; 216 different types of weaponry; 3,601 rounds; and 82 vehicles were found.
"We have given checks totaling N7,263,391,051.73 to 2,5143 families of deceased police officers over the course of the last nine months."
According to the Inspector General, the police will persist in their pursuit of excellence by adopting a more proactive policing strategy.
"Our responses to the current internal security threats require proactive, technology- and intelligence-driven strategic deployments," he declared.
By carefully examining the material at our disposal, we will try to stop criminal activity before it starts, break up their illegal networks, and quickly find and arrest the offenders. To keep ahead of changing threats, we must constantly hone our tactics and maintain a watchful and flexible attitude.
