Champions League: Boniface’s strike earns Leverkusen win over Milan

In the Champions League, Bayer Leverkusen defeated AC Milan 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Victor Boniface in the second half. The German team is off to a perfect start, while the Italians are still without a point.

Six minutes after the half, Mike Maignan of Milan parried a shot from Jeremie Frimpong, and Boniface scored the game's lone goal on the rebound.

It was just what the home team deserved following a first half in which Milan found it difficult to establish a footing in the game and they dominated possession and chances but were unable to go past Maignan.

The visitors were prompted by the goal to act, and they made a threat to equalise as they pinned Leverkusen back for long periods of the second half, but they fell to their second defeat in the opening two games of the competition.

Meanwhile, Karim Adeyemi scored a first-half hat-trick as last season’s losing finalists Borussia Dortmund crushed Celtic 7-1 in the Champions League with five goals in the opening 42 minutes.

The Westfalenstadion's 80,000 spectators began to celebrate early in the seventh minute when Emre Can scored from the penalty spot after Celtic custodian Kasper Schmeichel upended Jamie Gittens and received a booking.

Two minutes later, Daizen Maeda's header from Arne Engels gave Celtic a brief reprieve from the loud Yellow Wall, but Adeyemi's drive that deflected in off Auston Trusty in the 11th minute gave Celtic the lead again.

The Germany winger extended the score to 3-1 in the 29th minute with a shot into the top corner past a diving Schmeichel. Three minutes later, he completed his hat-trick. He then won a penalty in the 39th minute, which Serhou Guirassy tucked away.

Guirassy scored his second goal of the game in the 66th minute, and Felix Nmecha, a second-half substitution, finished the demolition in the 79th. Celtic's only saving grace was Schmeichel's decision to limit the depressing score to seven goals.
