FCE governing council removes Provost, appoints replacement

Isaac Miller has been appointed as the acting provost of the Federal College of Education, Technical, Akoka, Lagos State, by the Governing Council, following days of lingering demonstrations by students and staff over the leadership crisis that broke out there.

This was stated in an internal memo that management made public on Wednesday.

Wahab Azeez should "step down" as provost, according to the memo signed by college registrar Rasheed Dada and referencing FCE/T/AK/RO/IM/2/206.

The governing council members' official vehicles were vandalised by protesting students in recordings that surfaced on Monday, intensifying the institution's continuing leadership crisis. The members of the council reportedly barely escaped physical attack.

The purpose of this is to notify the college community that at the inaugural meeting of the 8th Governing Council of the College on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, the council directed that Wahab Ademola Azeez should step aside from office as the Provost of the College with effect from July 31, 2024,” the statement reads in part.
"In response to the aforementioned, the council decided unanimously to designate Dr. Isaac Oluwatoyin Miller as the acting provost effective immediately.”

The students stated in earlier, independent interviews that they were protesting the provost's treatment of them and the inadequate welfare on campus.

Speaking anonymously to our correspondent out of concern for retaliation, a teenager claimed that police officers "came and started shooting students." The youngster further claimed that the police had been invited to the campus by the school administration.

In a separate encounter with our correspondent, the beleaguered provost defended himself by asserting that staff members who were interested in his position were inciting the students to protest.

The state police command detained 32 people for allegedly attacking the Federal Government inspection team in an effort to put an end to the violence on Monday and restore law and order.
