FG plans performance-based salary scheme for workers

The Federal Government announced on Monday that a new pay scheme based on civil service employees' productivity is under progress.

The administration said that different salaries might be earned by workers at the same rank under the scheme.

The government stated that it was taking into consideration the creation of a novel wage structure after realising that productivity had a major role in the expansion of the national economy.

This was revealed on Monday during a meeting with Labour journalists by Nasir Raji-Mustapha, the director-general of the National Productivity Centre.

"We are working on creating a productivity-led pay structure that will make sure that individuals who contribute, regardless of their educational level, are compensated for their work," he stated. Employees on the same salary scale may receive varied pay under the proposed scheme.

The head of NPC emphasised that work was necessary for the completion of the task when asked if organised labour supported and contributed to the new idea for a productivity-led wage structure.

"Of course, labour is being carried along in this exercise as a critical stakeholder," stated Raji-Mustapha. As researchers, we don't just undertake things without thinking about who will be reading the reports afterwards.

"We convened a stakeholders' meeting with participation from the labour unions when we first started the project about three or four years ago. We also sent a message to the TUC and NLC asking if they would be in favour of the proposed wage structure, and they responded that they would.

The first portion of the study's report, according to Raji-Mustapha, is complete. The next step is to solicit feedback from a variety of stakeholders before submitting it to the federal government for review and potential adoption.

The Head of NPC also revealed that the Centre was working with many foreign agencies and groups to guarantee that the productivity and abilities of Nigerian labourers are significantly enhanced, which will have a favourable effect on the economy.

The worldwide Labour Organisation, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, the Africa Productivity Association, and the Asia Productivity Association are just a few of the worldwide organisations with which the NPC has expanded its scope of partnership.

He claims that the centre has made significant contributions to youth advocacy and productivity promotion, particularly for the youth corps members at the NYSC camps. He also claims that the NPC revived productivity promotion and preaching at the NYSC camps.

Additionally, he revealed that the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, would serve as the keynote speaker at the National Productivity Summit, which is being held in Abuja today (Tuesday) and is organised by the centre.
