Expert: Regenerative physiotherapy is essential for long-term pain relief

As the discipline moves toward regenerative physiotherapy, which emphasizes long-term healing rather than just pain management, traditional physiotherapy is progressively becoming outdated, according to clinical physiotherapist Mr. Tunji Olaosun.

In an interview, Olaosun, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Electro Aesthetic Palace LLP in Ikeja, Lagos, said physiotherapy has developed with the times and has found its place in the future of medicine.

He claims that the future of treating diseases affecting the joints, nerves, tissues, and brain is regenerative physiotherapy, a cutting-edge technique that uses non-invasive regeneration equipment to encourage the body and brain to start mending itself.

It is no longer acceptable to use traditional physiotherapy, which merely relieves pain and deftly avoids brain activation (despite the fact that the majority of musculoskeletal diseases are still caused by the brain). Regenerative physiotherapy, which blends physical therapy and regenerative technologies to accomplish genuine regeneration and healing, is the way of the future, he stated.

He clarified that regenerative physiotherapy functions by lowering oxidative stress, generating the anti-inflammatory chemicals required to heal injured tissues, and non-invasively promoting the body's synthesis of growth factors.

We employ top-of-the-line physiotherapy equipment that penetrates the body 10 to 12 centimeters deep to lower inflammation and promote cellular repair. These gadgets do what manual therapy cannot do,” Olaosun remarked.

According to Olaosun, regenerative medicine encompasses methods such as platelet-rich plasma and stem cell therapy, which are being employed in conjunction with physiotherapy to get better outcomes.

But his clinic does not require surgery because it uses non-invasive technologies.

When you visit us with osteoarthritis, we do more than just treat your pain. Our equipment makes tiny holes along your condyles, which causes the body to release stem cells by perfusing the afflicted area with blood. The arthritis is then resolved by these cells without the need for knee replacement surgery," he said.

He pointed out that one of the few facilities in West Africa providing this kind of cutting-edge physiotherapy at the moment is Electro Aesthetic Palace LLP, which collaborates with the international Original Equipment Manufacturer BTL.

Speaking about the difficulties facing physiotherapy in Nigeria, Olaosun stated that access to high-quality care has been hampered by the exodus of skilled workers, a lack of awareness of education, and a reluctance to learn new information—all of which are prevalent among Nigerian medical professionals—as well as by the antiquated equipment in government hospitals.

When conventional approaches do not work, he suggested that Nigerians look for regenerative physiotherapy.

"Physiotherapy, not more medications, is more than 65% of what we require as we age. Problems with drug absorption arise, and adverse effects may exacerbate pre-existing illnesses. "There is a better way with regenerative therapy," he stated.

Even though regenerative physiotherapy may not be currently affordable for everyone, he encouraged Nigerians who are coping with neurodegenerative, mental health, autoimmune, vascular, traumatic, metabolic, or other mental health conditions, such as dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or Parkinson's disease, to think about the long-term advantages of this treatment.

“Population medicine, which most hospitals practice, is not enough. Regenerative physiotherapy is a speciality practice of advanced physiotherapy, and it’s now available in Nigeria,” he said.
