Legendary defender Pepe announces retirement at 41
Pepe, a legendary football player from Portugal who played for more than 20 years, has formally declared his retirement from the game.
The 41-year-old, who was seen to be among the best defenders in the world, hangs up his boots after an incredible journey that saw him win club titles and represent his country with distinction.
Pepe declared in a video that was uploaded to his Instagram page on Thursday, writing the hashtag "OBRIGADO."
Pepe's final match took place in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024, where France overcame Portugal on penalties. He made history by being the oldest player to compete in the European Championship finals.
Pepe made a remarkable total of 141 games for the Portuguese national team over his distinguished career, during which he helped his country clinch the European Championship in 2016.
Pepe's most memorable period at the club level was his ten-year stay with Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, when he amassed an impressive trophy collection that included three La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League crowns.
In addition, he was the winner of two FIFA Club World Cups while he was at Santiago Bernabeu.
Pepe returns to Porto in 2019, where he flourished during his two stints with the Portuguese powerhouse, winning four Primeira Liga titles.
