NLC denies pulling out of the national demonstration
Reports claiming that the Nigeria Labour Congress has pulled out of the August 1 statewide demonstration against economic hardship have been refuted.
According to Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, the union is unable to pull out of a protest that it did not plan.
This was said in a news statement titled "The Nigeria Labour Congress cannot withdraw from a protest that it did not organise" that was signed by Ajaero on Tuesday.
We have learnt about the Nigeria Labour Congress's decision to withdraw from the much-discussed nationwide demonstration through a news report. The Nigeria Labour Congress refutes this claim, stating it is blatantly untrue.
In actuality, the Nigeria Labour Congress is unable to back out of a demonstration that it did not plan. Only the coordinators of the speculated national protest that can decide to pull out or continue with the protest,” Ajaero said.
Ajaero clarified that the NLC's industrial activities, like protests, are guided by a structured decision-making process that involves internal trade union structures and leadership permission to guarantee contemplation before initiating action.
"However, this does not imply that Organised Labour is unaware of the appalling living conditions that Nigerians have been forced to endure as a result of the government's severe economic policies," he clarified. The Nigeria Labour Congress is not the organisation spearheading the protest.
He declared that in these "trying and excruciating times," the NLC is in solidarity with the people of Nigeria.
Ajaero further urged President Bola Tinubu to extend an invitation to the protest movement's leaders for a discussion on their demands.
We beg the federal government and the subnational administrations once more to listen to the cries of the Nigerian people and do the needful. After all, it is said that the voice of the people is the voice of God,” he said.
Social media users are talking about the planned protest using the hashtags #EndBadGovernance, #TinubuMustGo, and #Revolution2024.
The President and law enforcement officials have urged young people to forgo the scheme.
