Peter Fregene, the former Green Eagles of Nigeria goalkeeper, is dead.
Fregene's close friend and former international Segun Odegbami revealed the news in a heartfelt Facebook post on Sunday night.
Odegbami stated that following a lengthy illness, the legendary Nigerian football player passed away in front of Tina, his wife, and two of his children.
The 72-year-old former striker thanked everyone who helped the 77-year-old goalie throughout his illness and lately requested financial support for Fregene.
And the Man passed away. Peter "Apo" Fregene, OLY, the former custodian for the Nigerian Green Eagles, who had been on life support for the previous seven days, went to be with his Creator a short while ago, the writer wrote.
He passed away peacefully in front of his loving wife Tina and two of his children.
"I extend a heartfelt "thank you" to all the generations of Nigerian football players, Olympians, athletes, fans, family, and amazing Nigerians who silently came together to support, pray for, and honour the will of the universe that allowed him to live until this night.
"Apo, good night. Finally, my friend, rest in peace.
Fregene, also referred to as "Apo" or the "Flying Cat," was the Nigerian national football team's first-choice custodian from 1968 to 1971. For the 1982 African Cup of Nations finals, he was then called up. Additionally, he competed for Nigeria in the Mexico Olympics in 1968.
The football team of Stationery Stores also mourned Fregene, who was referred to as a "fundamental component of the squad in the 1960s and 1970s."
