Police nab two women for stealing three-day-old baby in Delta

A three-day-old baby was saved after two women linked to a child-stealing ring were apprehended by the Delta State Police Command.
According to information obtained by PUNCH Online, a tricycle rider—whose name was withheld—reported suspicious activities to the police on October 1, 2024, Independence Day.

He said that two of the four women who had boarded his trike at the Effurun roundabout gave the other two women who remained in the tricycle a newborn baby.

One of the women said something to the effect that "the balance has been paid," and the others were told to let her know when they arrived at their destination.

The remaining two women, subsequently named as Tessi Ikechukwu and Lauretta Akomen, were sent to the Ekpan Police Station by the tricycle rider, who suspected foul play.
Akomen admitted as much that she had been given a drug that made her appear pregnant to carry out the scheme.

She later led the police to the residence of one Gloria, who acted as an intermediary between her and the traditional home.
Presently, both females are under police arrest, and a manhunt for further accomplices is ongoing.

In response to the event, Delta State Commissioner of Police CP Olufemi Abaniwonda praised the tricycle rider and urged others to follow in his footsteps, praising him "for his vigilance and patriotic act."
