Super Eagles focused on World Cup qualifiers – Omeruo
When the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers resume in June, Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has reassured Nigerian fans that their players are committed to giving it their all for as many points as possible.
Following their exhibition matches in Marrakech against Ghana and Mali, the Super Eagles squad left Morocco on Wednesday, with the majority of its players returning to their homes in Europe.
When the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers resumed in June, players were ready to give it their all for maximum points, as on-field captain Omeruo assured everyone after a heartbreaking loss to Mali at the international window of June 3–11, Nigeria plays the Bafana Bafana of South Africa at Uyo. On Match Days 3 and 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, Nigeria plays the Benin Republic away from home.
"We went into the game against Mali determined to win, just as we did against Ghana," Omeruo declared.
They ultimately took a chance, and we were unable to take ours. Football is that. All you have to do is take the risks that present themselves.
That being said, June is quickly approaching, and our attention is on the games against South Africa and the Benin Republic.
"A lot of the group's players have never participated in a World Cup and see this as a great chance to do so.
"We can't afford to fail the country and ourselves."
Nigeria has two points from its first two games played, good for third place in Group C at the moment. With two points apiece, they are even with Zimbabwe and Lesotho.
Toppers of tables Rwanda is currently at four points. South Africa is closely behind them with three points.
Benin is ranked last in the rankings with a single point.
A representative from each of the nine groups will advance to the FIFA World Cup in 2026, and the best loser will compete in the FIFA Play-off competition.
The Africa Zone (CAF) qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World, which began on November 15, 2023, is expected to end in November 2025.
