UNIZIK graduate escaping prankster’s tricycle robbery dies, friend hospitalised
Ifunanya Miracle, also known as Bliss, a recent graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University's Department of Quantity Surveying, died while attempting to flee an as-yet-unidentified prankster's heist on the school's grounds in the Awka neighbourhood of Anambra State.
Ifunanya's buddy, simply known as Peace, a Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry student who also participated in the crime, was reportedly hurt to various degrees and taken to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
According to the report, Ifunanya operated a point-of-sale on the school's property while she was a student.
On Sunday, June 9, 2024, the graduate was said to have closed her shop for the day and ridden a tricycle with Peace to a location.
The pair said that while they were travelling, a fellow traveller sitting next to them made an effort to pilfer their belongings.
A pupil from the institution, who wishes to remain anonymous to avoid being victimised, informed our correspondent that the two students jumped out of the moving tricycle in a last-ditch effort to flee the robbery. Although Peace was hurt, Miracle was unlucky to hit her head on the ground.
"Miracle just graduated from the university and works as a Point-of-Sale in the school," the student said. On June 9, 2024, at around 7:00 p.m., the incident occurred. She uses the front of my house as her PoS location.
"Her business belongings, which she had in storage under the stairwell in our compound, are still there. In the evening, she packed it and placed it back there. However, we recently learned that she had passed away.
"We were thinking, 'How? She still threw her stuff under our compound's stairway on Monday. We were told that she and her buddy were riding a moving trike when one of the other passengers gave them the order to hand over their phones to him.
Miracle banged her head on the road while trying to flee, and by the time she was taken to the hospital, she had passed away. Her buddy is still in the hospital after suffering injuries when she too sprang out of the tricycle.
Another student added that after telling the victims to give over their belongings, the man claimed to be playing a practical joke on them. Unverified rumours also said that the man had reported himself to the police.
"We heard the guy reported himself at the police station and claimed it was a prank," the student stated. He's joking around on a moving tricycle, how is it possible? There has been no word since the incident. Miracle, a woman, passed away recently because of the carelessness of some people who claimed to be pranksters.
It's possible that he intended to rob, but after realising the consequences of his actions, he shifted the topic of discussion to pranking. Regarding the case, the institution has not made any statements. It is concerning that the school has not addressed it. The girl recently finished her graduation.
Ifunanya Miracle, popularly known as Bliss, was a student in the Department of Quantity Surveying when she passed away. Peace works at the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry and is her friend. After the event, she was admitted to the hospital.
When contacted on Monday, the school's spokesperson, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, verified the incident and mentioned that the prankster, a final-year student, will be subject to disciplinary actions following Miracle's burial.
"The university is fully aware of the incident," he declared. It was a highly costly practical joke rather than a heist. Though they were unaware that it was a joke, the pupils were instructed to bring their phones. Thus, one of them perished and the other lived.
"It was determined that it was a joke during a meeting with the families of the victims and the final-year student who played the victims.
"The families have come to a certain understanding, and we would like the burial procedure to take place before the student that pranked them will face disciplinary measures.
"It was a sad event; the other student's hospital cost and the funeral of the deceased victim will be covered by the family of the concerned student. The school and the student who pulled the practical joke also regret it. We take this chance to caution students from playing costly practical jokes that end in death as the victim will have to face the music.
