Elumelu hints at NPFL club ownership

As part of his Corporate Social Responsibility, billionaire banker and philanthropist Tony Elumelu says he is assessing the feasibility of owning a club in the Nigerian Premier Football League.

After responding to a post by Adebayo Mustapha, a different user, who recommended that the President and Ministry of Sports could court leading businesses in the nation to acquire teams in the NPFL, Elumelu announced this on Monday via his X handle.

Mustapha thinks the NPFL will get better.

Mustapha, whose X handle is @LawyerDayo, wrote: "Is it possible to get the President and Ministry of Sport to comment on the purchase of at least one league team by major Nigerian firms as a community service initiative? Imagine if BUA purchases Kwara United, Elumelu purchases Rivers United, Dangote purchases Kano Pillars, and Geregu takes over 3SC. Imagine the competition.”
Elumelu tweeted in response to Mustapha, saying, "This is a nice idea." We are already assessing viability, and the Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh @OwanEnoh, has already approached me and is already thinking along these lines," Elumelu added.
