EPL: Rooney hails Xhaka as Sunderland’s signing of the season
Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has referred to Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka as "likely the signing of the season" following the Black Cats' remarkable beginning to their Premier League journey.
As reported by BBC Sport on Monday, Sunderland, having returned to the top tier this season, currently occupies the fourth position after 11 matches, amassing 19 points and progressing towards their main goal of evading relegation.
Xhaka, a previous midfielder for Arsenal, has played a pivotal role in their successful start, contributing both experience and leadership to the team.
The 33-year-old was among several summer acquisitions after their promotion from the Championship, arriving from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial fee of £13 million.
Rooney commented on The Wayne Rooney Show: "Upon returning to the Premier League, one might question if he can perform. Naturally, with a team that has just been promoted, one wonders what influence he could exert.
"However, he has likely been the signing of the season. His performance has been outstanding. When he faced challenges with Arsenal and had a fallout with the fans, it demonstrated his character to return and play for Arsenal again. Overcoming that situation and then excelling for Arsenal, followed by his contribution at Leverkusen in helping the team secure the title against Bayern Munich for the first time in over a decade, illustrates what a talented player he is.
"Sunderland also possesses a very youthful squad. He could serve as a father figure, and he will significantly assist the coach by acting as a liaison as captain.
"Moreover, with the numerous signings made during the summer, he will undoubtedly be a tremendous asset for the manager and his teammates, leveraging his experience," he concluded.
