FASU Games: UNILAG wins double athletics gold, Ghana shines
At the 11th All-Africa University Games on Thursday, the women's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay quartets from Team UNILAG won gold in both events, but in the other competitions, three of the five participating Ghanaian institutions stole the show.
In the women's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays, Team UNILAG won gold, silver, and bronze in the same order, placing them far ahead of their rivals and co-hosts, Lagos State University and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu.
Nonetheless, the Ghanaian universities of Development Studies, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the University of Ghana made a significant declaration for theircountry by winning the gold, silver, and bronze medals in the men’s 4x100m relay event.
Seven universities competed in the race, including UNIJOS, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, and co-host UNILAG.
The women's 100- and 200-meter gold medals won by Janet Mensah of Kwame Nkrumah University were just another spectacular example of Ghana's supremacy in track and field.
Mensah won the 100-meter gold in a time of 12.18 seconds, followed by UNICAP's Zaineb Awuni in 12.36 seconds and Morenikeji Suleimon from the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti in 12.38 seconds for the bronze.
With a time of 25.22 seconds, Mensah repeated her winning performance; Suleimon and Awuni traded positions for the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Aremu Adeyemi of FUOYE defeated the opposition in a deep men's 100-meter race to take first place in 10.70 seconds.
Kwaku Williams of the University of Ghana also won the men’s 200m.
Moses Mbila of the University of Ghana and Nathaniel Keyeremateng came in second and third, respectively, behind him.
The University of Lagos and Lagos State University are co-hosting the 2024 FASU Games, which will conclude on Sunday, September 29, with a closing ceremony held at LASU.
