Fleeing Ebonyi varsity student died in road crash -Police

The circumstances surrounding the death of Ayogu Evans, a 300-level student at Ebonyi State University, who had an accident and passed away on Saturday, December 2, while being pursued by police, were described by the Ebonyi State Police Command on Monday.

In a press release provided to our correspondent on Monday, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, the state police command spokesperson, said that the EBSU student drove off after being stopped for a "stop and search" at a checkpoint near Nkaliki Road in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Evans perished in a horrifying vehicle accident, according to report.

The Department of Sociology student was reportedly being pursued by the police after the accident. Bystanders drove him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short while later.
The people who drove him to the hospital attested that he was being pursued by the police when he unexpectedly had an accident, and that the pursuing police officers fled after the incident, according to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

"The police commissioner is using this platform to reassure the public that any incompetent police officer will face disciplinary action, and to urge the public to assist the police in carrying out their mandate by reporting any instances of unprofessional behavior by on-duty police officers to the police authority."
