How drinking water can kill you – Dietitian

Mrs. Oludayo Coates, a dietician, has advocated for consuming water in moderation in order to prevent the problems that come with consuming too much of it.

In an interview with reporters on Tuesday, Coates, who heads the Dietetics and Nutrition Department at the Alimosho General Hospital in Lagos, offered the counsel.

She claims that a lot of individuals have a hard time accepting that drinking too much water is bad for you.

Hyponatremia, an electrolyte imbalance brought on by an excess of total body water relative to total body sodium content, can result from consuming too much water, according to Coates.
The medical issue is potentially fatal, the specialist cautioned.

She went on to say that consuming too much water might also cause drowsiness, vomiting, muscle weakness and soreness, and a bloated stomach.

"We must consume food and water in moderation to promote healthy life because too much of anything is bad," she stated.

The nutritionist emphasized that every human being's existence and well-being depended on having access to clean portable water.

According to the United Nations (UN), water is essential for human survival, energy and food production, sustainable socioeconomic development, and healthy ecosystems. Coates cited this statement.

The suggested dosage
According to her, the National Academy of Science and General Medicine advised men and women to consume 3.7 and 2.7 liters of water, respectively, which equates to roughly 13 cups and 9 cups for each gender.

According to the HOD, a lack of water frequently results in dehydration, which can cause headache, lightheadedness, dry cough, elevated heart rate, and, if left untreated, renal failure, kidney stones, and urinary tract infections.

People consume different amounts of water, and this can be due to a variety of factors, including the weather, body weight, surroundings, and the type of work they do.

"To ensure well-being and proper function of the bodily system, we should drink water when we are thirsty and at other times," she stated.
