I’m sorry, Abia lawmaker apologises for assaulting Bolt driver

Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, has publicly apologised for attacking a Bolt driver who was delivering a package to him.

Ikwechegh acknowledged that his actions fell short of what was expected of a public servant.

"As a public servant, I recognise the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people," he said when he made his public apology on Monday. I sincerely apologise for my actions, which did not meet the expectations placed on me.

He expressed contrition for the damage and humiliation his acts had brought to Abuwatseya, his supporters, and the general public.

Additionally, he affirmed his collaboration with the Nigerian Police, promising to uphold responsibility and assist with their investigation.

"I, Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, would like to speak about a very upsetting incident that happened at my house not too long ago. There is a video that has leaked that shows me acting inappropriately towards an Uber driver who came to give a waybill to me. I acknowledge that my acts were inappropriate and unworthy of a public officer, and I sincerely apologise for them.

As a public servant, I am aware of the confidence that the Nigerian people and my constituency have placed in me. I sincerely apologise for my actions, which did not meet the expectations placed on me. I acknowledge that my behaviour has hurt and embarrassed the driver, my supporters, and the country as a whole.

"I would want to reassure everyone that I am completely assisting the Nigerian Police in their investigation into this incident. The statement said, "I back their efforts to make sure that justice is done and that those who are at fault are held accountable."

Additionally, he praised the Nigeria Police Force for enforcing the law and defending residents' rights.

"I also appreciate that my party and the Nigerian Police swiftly condemned my actions, demonstrating our collective commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of all citizens," he said.

Ikwechegh stated that he was acting right now to resolve the fundamental problems that caused this catastrophe.

"In order to make sure that such behaviour never occurs again, I am seeking professional counselling." Furthermore, I will be engaging in community service initiatives focused on promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.”

He, however, called on all Nigerians to join him in fostering a culture of respect, tolerance, and understanding.
"To create a society where everyone is treated with respect and dignity, we must cooperate. Ikwechegh continued, "I appreciate your understanding and hope you would accompany me on this path to recovery and development.

Abuwatseya, the distraught driver, captured the altercation with Ikwechegh at the lawmaker's Maitama, Abuja, home in a video that went viral on Monday.

Because the driver had allegedly requested him to come out and pick up the snail he was delivering, the obviously irate congressman was shown on camera repeatedly slapping and insulting the driver.

Additionally, he threatened to have the driver "disappear" without any repercussions.

However, the incident has sparked widespread outcry, with many people denouncing his behaviour.

After what happened, Ikwechegh was invited by the police for interrogation at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
The congressman was also criticised by the police for tarnishing the reputation of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun by challenging the driver to phone him after he had slapped him.
