Increase in petrol prices: Expect social unrest, TUC cautions FG.
According to the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), societal unrest in Nigeria is expected as a result of the recent rise in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) pumps.
This occurred as TUC protested the rise in the petrol pump price, claiming that it would make worker poverty worse.
On Wednesday, the union made this announcement in a statement that was signed by Festus Osifo, the president.
Remember that the price of gasoline at the pump went up from N617 to N897 and N855 a litre on Tuesday.
The Nigerian government was urged by TUC to "immediately rescind these decisions, promote policies that will strengthen the naira, and take decisive steps to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians" in response to the hike.
As the working class bears the brunt of such decisions, it stated that the abrupt raise, "implemented without consultation with critical stakeholders," represented a flagrant disrespect for the welfare of the Nigerian people.
The TUC emphasised, "The abrupt increase in fuel and electricity prices will only exacerbate these issues, resulting in further hardship and potential social unrest."
"We demand that the government reverse these actions right away, support measures that will bolster the value of the naira, and take decisive action to lessen the suffering of Nigerians."
In addition, the Union stated that "the government must act swiftly to restore confidence and prevent further deterioration in the living conditions of its citizens."
The earlier appeal for an urgent reversal of the petrol price hike came from the Nigeria Labour Congress.
Since the working class is disproportionately affected by these decisions, it claimed that the abrupt hike, which was "implemented without consultation with critical stakeholders," reflected a flagrant disrespect for their wellbeing.
"These difficulties will only be made worse by the abrupt increase in fuel and electricity prices, resulting in more suffering and possible social unrest," TUC said.
We want the government to reverse these policies right away, support measures that would make the naira stronger, and act decisively to lessen the suffering of Nigerians.
In order to preserve public trust and stop additional declines in people' living standards, the Union stated that "the government must act swiftly."
Previous calls for an immediate stop to the increase in petrol prices had also come from the Nigeria Labour Congress.
