JUST IN: Military yields to pressure, frees abducted Lagos editor
After being kidnapped from his Lagos State home on Friday, March 15, 2024, military authorities finally gave in to pressure on Thursday and freed Segun Olatunji, the editor of FirstNews.
After constant pressure from the media, he was released to a few media stakeholders on Thursday, including Yomi Odunuga of The Nation newspaper and Iyobosa Uwugiaren of Thisday Newspaper in Abuja.
They were requested to pledge that Olatunji would be on hand in case it was required once again.
Olatunji's employers, the Nigeria Guild of Editors, and the International Press Institute all criticised his detention in separate comments and urged the government to either charge or free the editor.
Recall that individuals wearing military uniforms kidnapped Olatunji, a former PUNCH correspondent from Kaduna State, from his home in the Iyana Odo neighbourhood of Abule Egba, Lagos State.
On Wednesday, the IPI announced that it had located Olatunji within the Defence Intelligence Agency's custody.
Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, who answers to the Chief of Defence Staff, is in charge of the DIA.
Media stakeholders will brief journalists on the development at 11 a.m. in Abuja.
