Lagos sweeps National Youth Games boxing gold medals

Team Lagos has won all four gold medals in the boxing sport at the 2024 National Youth Games, a magnificent feat of agility, tenacity, and guts.

The supremacy of the Team Lagos U-15 boxers in all weight classes is a remarkable accomplishment for the state's junior boxing scene.

With Agboola Oyindamola's triumph in the 40 kg female division, the gold medal run got underway. Bello Olamide Lawal did the same, winning the gold medal in the 42 kg male division. Bolarinwa Michael completed the clean sweep with his victory in the 44kg male competition, while Yakubu Sofiat won first place in the 42kg female division.

These remarkable accomplishments demonstrate the state's dedication to spotting and developing young talent, and these athletes have the ability to succeed on both the national and international arenas.

This achievement highlights the ongoing work of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, whose administration has made sports development a priority.

Under his direction, significant expenditures in grassroots programs and sporting facilities have not only led to the discovery and development of talent but have also sparked an era of exceptional sportsmanship.

The chances being given for athletes and administrators to excel and receive recognition at different levels demonstrate Governor Sanwo-Olu's goal of Lagos becoming Africa's sports hub.

Speaking about the team's accomplishment, the Lagos State Sports Commission's Director-General, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, praised the young fighters for their commitment and self-control. He underlined that these successes provide the groundwork for more accomplishments in the future, on a national and worldwide scale.

These sportsmen have brought pride to Lagos. Their accomplishments highlight the value of developing grassroots athletes, and we're still determined to help them reach even higher goals," said Fatodu.

The fact that Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Lagos State's Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, was present at the fight and gave the young boxers encouragement and support showed how important the championship match is to the Lagos State government. Ogunlende motivated the boxers with words of encouragement and tangible assistance, giving them more self-assurance and driving them to produce outstanding performances that ultimately secured their victory.
With these victories, Lagos boxing's future seems more promising than before. Apart from bestowing honour upon the state, these athletes have also served as an inspiration to a next generation of boxers. The attention now shifts to their developing careers as they return to Lagos, feted as heroes, with several of them aspiring to represent Nigeria internationally.

As Team Lagos celebrates this momentous accomplishment, it is clear that the state's sports efforts are paying off handsomely, and the best sports organisation in the nation has top-notch leadership. The accomplishments of these young athletes serve as evidence of the efficacy of state policies and initiatives. Lagos is proud of it, and it sets a great example for other states to emulate.
