LAWMA to tackle 1,040 tonnes of textile waste daily

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced its initiatives to address the environmental challenges posed by the daily generation of 1,040 tonnes of textile waste in the state.
As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, made this announcement in a statement on Monday in Lagos, coinciding with the observance of International Zero Waste Day.

This year's theme for Zero Waste Day is “Towards zero waste in fashion and textiles.”

Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized that LAWMA is committed to taking significant measures to mitigate the environmental effects of textile waste in accordance with the theme.

“Textile waste accounts for roughly eight percent of the 13,000 tonnes of waste produced daily in Lagos.

“LAWMA intends to prohibit the disposal of textile waste in all landfills across the state. We will partner with Tejuosho Market in Yaba to facilitate the collection of textile waste for transfer to recycling facilities.”

He also mentioned that students at the LAWMA Academy are being educated on how to upcycle textile waste into useful products, thereby fostering sustainable practices and generating economic opportunities for the community.
He reaffirmed the agency's dedication to achieving zero waste in Lagos State, in line with global efforts to reduce waste generation and enhance resource recovery.

Dr. Gbadegesin highlighted the critical need for sustainable waste management practices, stating, “International Zero Waste Day serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to safeguard the environment through sustainable waste management.

“At LAWMA, we are fully dedicated to executing policies and programs that uphold zero waste principles, which include waste sorting, recycling, and waste-to-energy projects.

“However, for these initiatives to succeed, it is essential for every resident of Lagos to take responsibility for proper waste disposal and environmental stewardship,” Dr. Gbadegesin concluded.
