Morocco makes history with first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup title
In a historic achievement for African football, Morocco secured the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup title with a decisive 2-0 win against Argentina in the final, which took place early Monday morning in Santiago, Chile.
The North African team credited their remarkable victory to emerging talent Yassir Zabiri, who scored two goals in the first half, first in the 12th minute and then again in the 29th, effectively silencing the Argentine supporters and clinching the championship.
Despite Argentina’s determined attempts in the second half, they could not penetrate a well-organized Moroccan defense.
As reported by ESPN, captain Rayan El-Mourabet exemplified leadership, fortifying a robust defense, while goalkeeper Youssef Bakkali showcased an exceptional performance, executing several crucial saves to preserve a clean sheet.
Morocco’s journey to success was far from straightforward. Placed in a challenging group with football giants Spain, Brazil, and Mexico, the Atlas Lions managed to top the group despite an initial defeat to Mexico.
They subsequently triumphed over Brazil and Spain in remarkable fashion to progress further.
In the knockout stages, Morocco eliminated South Korea in the round of 16, outperformed the United States in the quarter-finals, and narrowly defeated France on penalties in a tense semi-final. Their victory against Argentina in the final concluded a remarkable tournament journey.
With this achievement, Morocco becomes the second African nation to win the U-20 World Cup, following Ghana’s notable victory over Brazil in 2009.
This triumph not only signifies Morocco’s first FIFA trophy at any level but also highlights the nation’s rise as a formidable force in international football.
It represents a pivotal moment for Moroccan sports and a moment of pride for African football.
