N85,000 minimum wage demonstration of Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to workers’ welfare – Lagos TUC

The Lagos State Chapter of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has stated that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu's acceptance of the N85,000 minimum salary is evidence of his commitment to addressing the welfare of the state's workforce.

This was said in a statement released on Friday in Lagos by Mr. Gbenga Ekundayo, the state chairman of the TUC, and Mr. Aladetan Abiodun, the secretary.

Both of them acknowledged the minimum wage announcement, but they also gave the governor credit for realising that the current minimum pay needed to be reviewed.

"Although we have noted the N85,000 offer, we are excited to start talking about this important issue at our next meeting on Monday, October 21.

"Organised Labour is optimistic that, by means of constructive dialogue, a more robust outcome that takes into account the economic realities of Lagos as well as the labour contributions of its workforce can be achieved," the statement read.

The union officials stated that the negotiations will be guided by the values of good faith, fairness, and mutual respect and expressed hope about the forthcoming sessions.

"We are prepared to cooperate with the government to guarantee that the result is advantageous to the employees and long-lasting for the state.

"We are still devoted to making sure that the greatest standards of accountability and transparency are upheld throughout this process.

"Worker welfare is of utmost importance, and we are confident that our collaboration with the government will yield a solution that accurately represents the worth of its labour force and the need to improve their living conditions,” they said."
According to NAN, Sanwo-Olu declared in a television station interview that his administration will provide a minimum salary of N85,000 to employees.
