Nigeria, Cameroon friendly match rescheduled again after CAF rejection
Following the Confederation of African Football's rejection of a proposed move to Monday, the international match between Nigeria's Super Falcons and the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon will now take place at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta on Tuesday (tomorrow).
The Super Falcons confirmed the change on Sunday after first announcing the rescheduling of the match on their official X (previously Twitter) handle.
"Due to a last-minute request from FECAFOOT, our friendly versus Cameroon will now take place on Tuesday, June 3 at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Abeokuta," the announcement read.
The Nigeria Football Federation and the Cameroonian Football Federation proposed a new date of Monday, June 2, but CAF rejected it, therefore the original plan was reinstated.
After the first leg, which was originally planned for Saturday, May 31 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, was canceled, the match was momentarily moved forward to Monday, June 2. It had been originally set for Tuesday, June 3.
Due to the Cameroonian delegation's delayed arrival—they arrived in Ikenne late Friday night, too late for the necessary pre-match procedures and recuperation—that match was called off.
Due to Cameroon's travel issues, the first leg had to be postponed, and both sides had to concentrate on only one match.
The Super Falcons announced a revised date of June 2 for the remaining encounter in an attempt to accommodate the change in plans, but CAF refused to ratify the alteration, stating that the original Tuesday, June 3 fixture date must stay.
In the meantime, the Cameroonian team has now reached Ijebu Ode and is preparing there in preparation for the match in neighboring Abeokuta.
The game is a crucial component of the Super Falcons' preparation for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and will be their first appearance since their close 1-0 friendly loss to France in November.
Despite not making it to the next WAFCON, Cameroon is still a well-known opponent. Nigeria has an impressive head-to-head record; the Lionesses have lost to the Falcons in 2012 and have failed to score in their last six games.
