NMU Governing Council chairman looks for answers to the problems plaguing varsity
Adewale Adeogun, the acting chairman of the governing council of the Nigerian Maritime University in Okerenkoko, Delta State, has called for prompt action to address the urgent issues the university is now facing.
Speaking at the Warri council meeting, Adeogun conveyed her grave concern over the university's lack of progress after only six years of operation.
Adeogun underscored the pressing necessity for governmental engagement and stressed the significance of constructing a permanent campus and guaranteeing sufficient funds.
He said that the suspension of projects started by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) had impeded the university's progress.
Adeogun said, "It is depressing to see that Nigerian Maritime University is still having trouble getting off the ground despite being a specialised university." "We have to put forth a lot of effort to ensure government support, philanthropic contributions, and community involvement to propel the university forward.”
The Acting Chairman also emphasised how important it is for University Management and the Governing Council to work together to address the institution's problems.
He named the Nigerian Maritime University Bill and the NIMASA Act as the two main issues that needed to be addressed right away.
In order to facilitate the Nigerian Maritime University Bill's swift passage through the House of Representatives and eventual signing into law by the President, Adeogun urged the pertinent authorities to act immediately.
In order to guarantee sufficient funding and support for the university's operations, he further underlined the necessity of Nigerian Maritime University being brought back under the jurisdiction of NIMASA.
"Nigerian Maritime University ought to be one of Nigeria's top maritime universities.
He made an appeal, saying, "We must collaborate to create an environment where our staff and students can thrive."
As he chaired the Governing Council, the Acting Chairman vowed to be open, accountable, and collaborative.
He asked all parties involved to work together to promote the expansion and advancement of the university.
