Prime Minister sets to ban kids from social media
Anthony Albanese, the prime minister of Australia, has unveiled plans to outlaw kids' use of social media.
The administration will present legislation in 2024, according to the prime minister, to impose a minimum age requirement for access to social media and other pertinent digital sites.
"We acknowledge that social media is negatively impacting kids' social lives and separating them from authentic friendships and experiences," he declared in a statement.
Although he expressed a preference to put the minimum age at 16, he stated that engagement with the states and territories would inform the legislation.
A survey done in August by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, a public broadcaster, found that 61% of Australians were in favour of limiting access to social media to individuals under the age of 17.
Simultaneously, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas hired former federal judge Robert French to investigate legal avenues for prohibiting minors under the age of 14 from using social media.
The prime minister stated that when draughting the legislation, the federal government would take Robert French's review into account.
