Slot defends Liverpool’s attack despite fourth straight defeat
Arne Slot maintains that Liverpool are "not losing confidence" despite suffering a fourth consecutive defeat, following Manchester United's 2-1 victory at Anfield on Sunday.
This defeat has intensified the Dutchman's most challenging period since he succeeded Jürgen Klopp.
The Liverpool manager emphasized the importance of resilience and self-belief over blame, rejecting notions of panic and encouraging his players to trust in their offensive strategy — even as they continue to be plagued by missed opportunities and errors during set-pieces.
This statement comes from the post-match comments made on Sunday, which were reported on the club's website on Monday by our correspondent.
Slot pointed to the fine margins that have separated Liverpool from turning their dominance into victories.
“If you just put all the highlights [of our losses] together, you would say it’s hardly possible that we lose these games.
“We’re creating eight, nine, ten open chances — that’s not normal at this level. We just have to start finishing them,” he said.
Yet the manager also admitted frustration at seeing another game decided by a set piece — and at the first-half incident involving Alexis Mac Allister, who required stitches after a clash of heads moments before United’s opener.
“The healthcare of a player is important.
“If a player needs four stitches, you’d hope everybody understands he needs immediate treatment. But it didn’t happen. Still, that’s not the reason we lost — we missed far too many chances,” Slot said.
He added that Liverpool’s fair play ethos makes such moments harder to accept.
The Dutchman said, “We are not a team that goes to the floor pretending it’s a head injury to kill a counter-attack. That’s not who we are.
“So if a player of ours is on the floor, you’d hope people say, ‘It’s Liverpool, they don’t do these things — let’s blow the whistle.’”
Despite four losses, Slot remains steadfast in the belief that hasn’t eroded inside the dressing room.
“I cannot see we’ve lost confidence.
“If we keep producing what we are doing, and do a few things a little better, then there’s every reason to expect that we start winning football games again,” he maintained.
And as for the pressure of succeeding Klopp and enduring his first major wobble at Anfield? Slot shrugged it off.
“You go from challenge to challenge.
“When I came here, people said, ‘Let’s see how he does at Liverpool.’
“Now we’ve lost four times, it’s another challenge. That’s football. You just keep going,” he said.
Champions League match week three resumes Tuesday, and Slot’s team will be travelling to Germany to play Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.
