Telecoms union suspends planned strike
The Nigerian Senior Staff Association for Private Telecommunications and Communications has called off its planned walkout, which was scheduled to start on Thursday.
The union claimed in a statement released on Wednesday that agreements made with the subcontractors it had disagreements with were the reason for the suspension, which was signed by General Secretary Okonu Abdullahi.
The union reportedly announced on April 2 that it will go on an indefinite strike over purported unresolved concerns with subcontractors connected to Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd., according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
According to the union, PTECSSAN vowed to take industrial action against the signatory subcontractors with effect from April 4, 2024, in order to address the concerns of its members.
Following a meeting at the union secretariat, several agreements were made, one of which was for businesses to acknowledge that employees have the fundamental right to freely affiliate with the union.
It is mandated that the enterprises provide health facilities that comply with the National Health Insurance Scheme, providing coverage for the personnel, their spouses, and up to four dependents.
According to NAN, the union is demanding that its members' dues be paid on time, that their basic right to organise be recognised immediately, and that the union be recognised as the representative in negotiations for their welfare.
Additionally, PTECSSAN demanded that union members involved in the dispute have regularised their job.
