UNIZIK student bites lecturer over TikTok video dispute
A female student attacked and bit a lecturer following a furious dispute over a TikTok video, causing havoc at Nnamdi Azikiwe University's Faculty of Arts in Awka.
The student was filming a dance video in the faculty corridor when the professor, Dr. Chukwudi Michael, interrupted her. The incident took place on campus.
When Dr. Michael attempted to walk by, witnesses reported that the student was dancing while being filmed.
"I apologise," the lecturer remarked as he passed by, tapping her on the shoulder. However, she became agitated and yelled, "Can you imagine how he just hit me?" according to an eyewitness.
The student grabbed the lecturer's clothing as the argument swiftly descended into violence. Even when bystanders tried to defuse the situation, the student bit the lecturer on both arms, leaving visible marks.
A viral video of the incident circulating on social media shows the student shouting at the lecturer while holding onto his clothes, and another clip shows Dr. Michael raising his hands in an attempt to avoid further confrontation.
UNIZIK’s Chief Security Officer, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the incident, saying an investigation is ongoing.
Yes, such an occurrence did occur. Investigations are still underway, and after we finish our findings, the school will express its stance," Chukwurah stated.
He clarified that after the student passed by, Dr. Michael said he heard him insulting him. Fearing he had been caught on camera, he allegedly urged her to remove the footage when he returned to make sure she was his pupil. The altercation resulted from this.
According to sources, the student is a history and international studies 300-level student and the daughter of an engineering department lecturer at UNIZIK.
Following the investigation, the university has committed to taking the necessary steps.
