US election: Obama expresses disappointment, urges calm after Trump’s win

Donald Trump's electoral victory has disappointed former US President Barack Obama, who acknowledged that it was not the result he had hoped for and emphasised the significance of a peaceful transition of power.

Obama's remarks stand in stark contrast to Trump's historic refusal to accept defeat to Joe Biden four years prior, which led to Trump's supporters' violent January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

“Clearly, this is not the result we had hoped for,” Obama said in a statement on Wednesday. However, being a citizen of a democracy means accepting the peaceful transition of power and acknowledging that our viewpoint won't always prevail.

Additionally, the former president gave Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate high marks.
