Winner emerges at NMS@70 golf tourney
A handicapped eight-player, Navy Captain Sunday Haruna, won the overall competition at the TY Buratai Golf Course in Abuja, shooting 77 gross and netting 68 in a unique golf tournament honouring the inauguration of the Nigeria Military School seven decades ago.
The NMS ex-boys organisation organised the event, which was kicked off by Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, on Saturday. It was a part of the school's 70th anniversary celebrations.
AVM K.G. Lar (retd.), the chairman of the local organising committee, said that 200 golfers took part in the competition.
There are about 200 golfers participating, comprising of 150 of our friends who are joining us from different golf clubs around the nation and 50 former NMS guys. I won the competition when it was held at the Nigerian Air Force Base Shasha in Lagos last year, according to AVM Lar.
Thanking the organisers for organising the golf event, Ogalla, an ex-boy from the 1982 set and special guest of honour, remarked that sports had always been a part of military culture.
"Let me start by thanking the organising committee for this golf tournament," he stated. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of Nigeria Military School, our alma mater, we have jointly planned this event.
"The Nigeria Military School is a school that we are all proud of, and if you ask me about my favourite military experience, I'll direct you there. We get our discipline, character, resilience, and work ethic from there, and it's also the character that propels us forward as a whole.
