Woman dies as container crushes car in Lagos

In the Alapere neighbourhood of Lagos State, a 40-foot container crushed and killed an unidentified woman.

A Nissan car with the licence plate ABJ 692 BG was involved in an accident involving a Mack 40-foot fully laden container that was reported to have been lost control of by the driver owing to speeding.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority's Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, revealed this in a statement that was made accessible to media on Friday.

The allegation claims that the Mack articulated truck driver and his motorboy left the scene of the crash.

According to Taofiq, the site was attended by representatives of the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASTMA, and other pertinent agencies.

The deceased was turned over to police at the Alapere Police Station, he continued.

Bakare Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, advised drivers to avoid speeding and to regularly inspect their cars before leaving for every trip.

The statement said, in part, "Today, with assistance from officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority by NNPCL inward Estate, Alapere, Lagos, a fully loaded 40-foot Mack articulated truck fell on a Nissan Car (ABJ 692 BG) and instantly killed a woman at the rear of the car while the car driver survived unharmed.

"Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of LASTMA's Public Affairs and Education Department, affirmed that the driver of the Mack articulated truck with his motor-boy fled the scene of the deadly collision right away.
Initial inquiries have shown that the Mack driver struck a moving Nissan sedan being driven by NNPCL from Alapere, Ogudu, on the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway, Lagos, while travelling at a high rate of speed and losing control due to a brake failure.

"But, Mr. Olalekan Bakare Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, cautioned the driving public, especially truck drivers, to cease speeding and make sure their vehicles are properly checked, including the braking system, before embarking on any journey within or outside the state."
