#October1protest: Sowore joins protesters in Lagos
Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has joined the ongoing demonstration in Lagos State.
One of the main protest organisers, Sowore, arrived at the Ikeja Underbridge protest site at eight fifty minutes early.
Speaking to reporters, Sowore claimed that bringing Nigeria to the "promised land" required this demonstration.
He stressed that the action represented the people's rejection of the Independence Day celebrations organised by the government.
Sowore also questioned whether Nigerians had not given the administration enough chances, considering how previous President Muhammadu Buhari allegedly exploited the additional time allotted to him.
"This is one of the steps that will lead us to the promised land," he declared. Today is a symbolic day to reject their independence as we want our own, as we did in August.
"Have we not made enough effort? There is not much more time. We extended the deadline; observe what Buhari accomplished. We granted them extra time, and they used it to purchase a new home, a private plane, and an increase in fuel prices. We let him more time, and they left us in the dark.
"We extended our patience with them; they paid us the minimum pay and set a maximum for themselves. Allow them to step down so that we may be certain they truly comprehend the sentiments of others this time around.
As the nation celebrates its 64th Independence Day, protestors gathered at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos State on Tuesday morning.
However, a sizable number of security guards, including police officers, representatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, are keeping a careful eye on the protest.
Meanwhile, the demonstrators are currently marching along the Awolowo Way.
