UNIJOS lecturers embark on strike over unpaid March salary
Lecturers at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have officially declared an indefinite strike, effective today, Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) UNIJOS branch initiated the total withdrawal of services due to the non-payment of their March 2026 salaries.
Key Details of the Strike
Effective Date: Immediate effect from Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
Scope of Action: Members have been directed to abstain from:
All lectures and teaching activities.
Conduct of examinations.
Statutory and departmental meetings.
Core Grievances:
Failure to pay salaries for the month of March 2026.
Non-inclusion/exclusion of the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) from staff remuneration.
Who is Responsible?
Professor Jurbe Molwus, the ASUU UNIJOS Chairman, stated that the university's internal bursary department had already completed its processing of the salaries. The union explicitly blamed the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) for the delay.
"We are not going to work until we are paid. It seems our patience is being taken for granted by those who are determined to frustrate industrial harmony." — Prof. Jurbe Molwus
Impact on Students
This action comes at a critical time for the university. Management had recently adjusted the academic calendar following the Easter break, but with this strike, all academic activities are now expected to be significantly disrupted. A strike monitoring team has been activated by the union to ensure total compliance across the campus.
Despite the Federal Government's recent claims that the "era of ASUU strikes is over," this localized action highlights ongoing friction regarding federal financial processes and salary disbursements.
