2027: I will consider PDP-LP merger if…, – Obi
The prospect of a union between the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party has been brought up by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in 2023.
In an interview that was posted on YouTube on Saturday, Obi addressed the possibility that Atiku Abubakar, the PDP's 2023 flagbearer, will endorse him as a Southeast candidate in the 2027 presidential election.
In response to the interviewer's inquiry, Obi conveyed his appreciation for Abubakar's admission that he might receive support because of the South-East candidate. "I applaud him and appreciate his remarks, particularly the one in which he pledged to back me in the event that the South East receives the presidential ticket," Obi remarked.
But Obi made it clear that the welfare of Nigeria and its people comes before any political scheming or personal ambition. "I have a lot of potential, but I'm not desperate to be president; I'm desperate to see Nigeria work for the poor people in particular," he said.
Regarding the possibility of a PDP-LP merger, Obi stated that he was amenable to the notion as long as the end result was to improve Nigerian governance and realise its enormous potential. "I support the merger if it allows us to properly govern Nigeria and unlock all those things that will improve the country," he declared.
Obi made it clear that he does not want to form alliances or mergers in order to gain power or win election.
"I'm not for it or part of it, I don't want to be part of anything like that if it's just a merger for election or state capture," he declared.
The former governor of Anambra State emphasised the value of harmony and collaboration between people and organisations, but only when the goal is to improve Nigeria.
"We must come together to be able to build a better Nigeria," he stated, "it might be at the party level, it might be at the individual level, it might be at any level."
