Super Falcons brace up for second Cameroon friendly series
Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set to return to the field in Yaounde on Tuesday, eager to demonstrate their capabilities following a narrow 1–0 loss to Cameroon in the first of two international friendlies over the weekend.
The current African champions were thwarted by a dramatic stoppage-time goal at the Military Stadium last Saturday, a result that granted the Indomitable Lionesses early bragging rights in the preparatory series leading up to this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Cameroon’s pivotal moment occurred deep into added time when Yvana Mbomezomo struck from distance, successfully beating Nigeria’s debutant goalkeeper, Comfort Erhabor. The young shot-stopper had shown promise throughout the match, managing earlier pressure with poise before the late goal deprived her of a memorable first cap.
Nigeria sought to find a breakthrough in the second half, with Joy Omewa, Precious Christopher, Folashade Ijamilusi, Esther Onyenezide, and Michelle Alozie brought on to generate momentum. However, Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Ange Bawou, proved to be a formidable barrier, making crucial saves to maintain her team’s lead.
Head coach Justin Madugu is anticipated to modify his lineup for the rematch as the Falcons aim for better balance and more precise execution. Chiamaka Nnadozie, often considered Africa’s top goalkeeper in recent years, may return to the goal, while Alozie could integrate into the defense alongside Oluwatosin Demehin, Osinachi Ohale, and Glory Ogbonna.
In the midfield, Onyenezide, Christopher, Christy Ucheibe, Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene, and Jennifer Echegini offer diverse tactical alternatives. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Gift Monday, Rinsola Babajide, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Ijamilusi remain vital attacking options as Nigeria seeks to regain their offensive sharpness.
Although the match does not carry any tournament points, the rivalry and recent encounters between the two teams promise to create an intense atmosphere.
As preparations reach a critical stage, the Falcons are concentrating on providing a more precise and effective performance while rebuilding their confidence in anticipation of Africa's premier women's football event.
