Army, NDLEA nab terrorists drug shipment
A consignment of illegal drugs intended for Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State was intercepted by the Nigerian Army's 21 Armoured Brigade and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in a cooperative operation.
Zagazola Makama, a security analyst and counterinsurgency expert, stated via X on Tuesday that the joint team swiftly executed an operation in Konduga Local Government Area based on intelligence, which led to the seizure of 163 bags of a psychoactive substance known as "Goom" or "Akusukura" in the local dialect. There were an astounding 2.5 tonnes of the illegal narcotic found in all.
Makama via X on Tuesday disclosed that the operation was initiated as a result of a tip-off, highlighting the critical function that timely information plays in countering both terrorism and narcotics trafficking.
Makama stated, "At a Konduga warehouse, 163 bags of the drug, or 2.5 tonnes, were recovered as a consequence of the operation, which was carried out in response to a tip-off.
"The deadly psychoactive substance, also referred to as "Goom" or "Akusukura," is suspected of being an illicit substance. It poses a serious threat to public health and presents a challenge for drug policy."
He continued by saying that users of the chemical, which comes in a variety of forms, mostly take it in liquid and powdered form to increase their body's levels of psychological or nervous activity, or to put it another way, to get high.
The NDLEA team leader received the recovered materials, and the soldiers closed off the area. The operation demonstrates the value of interagency cooperation and the military and NDLEA's dedication to maintaining Nigeria's security, Makama continued.
