Assaulted female driver will get justice, says Lagos NURTW chair
The chairman of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Mustapha Adio, commonly referred to as Tafa Sego, stated on Monday that justice would be served for the assaulted female driver, Yetunde Amole.
Adio made this statement during a meeting at the union’s office located in Oko Oba, Agege, where he welcomed Amole, who had arrived earlier in the day.
Amole was greeted warmly and escorted into the chairman’s office. It is important to note that she was recently featured in a viral video where she was attacked by an individual named Friday Onu in the Ajah area of the state.
According to Amole, Onu attempted to steal the battery from her vehicle, and when she confronted him, he violently assaulted her, causing physical harm and damaging her clothing.
The video sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians, many of whom condemned Onu's actions, suspecting him to be affiliated with the union.
Following the incident, Onu was apprehended by officers from the Lagos State Police Command at the Maroko Division and subsequently taken to Falomo Police Hospital due to health issues.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the command, indicated that Onu would face charges in a competent court once medical professionals confirm his fitness for trial.
In response, the NURTW chairman asserted, “We will ensure that Yetunde Amole receives justice in this case. This will serve as a stern warning to anyone who might consider harassing drivers in the state.”
Sego also urged the public to uphold the fundamental human rights of drivers and reiterated the union’s strict stance against any form of harassment directed at its members.
He clarified that the assailant is not a member of the NURTW but rather an individual known as an area boy, who is not associated with the union.
Reaffirming the union’s dedication to professionalism, Sego highlighted that NURTW members are trained to engage with the public in a respectful and responsible manner.
He also commended the Lagos State Government and Police Command for the swift arrest of the suspect, pledging the union’s full support in ensuring that justice is served.
