BREAKING: Ex-Oyo gov Olunloyo dies at 90

Dr. Victor Olunloyo, a former governor of Oyo State, has passed away.

His family released a statement on Sunday, indicating that he died just days shy of his 90th birthday.

The announcement, titled ‘Victor Olunloyo goes home,’ was signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the family.

The statement expressed, “With profound sorrow yet with gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the glorious passing of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, mathematician, engineer, and esteemed technocrat, just a few days before he would have turned 90.

“Dr. Olunloyo held the titles of Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, and he was the inaugural Rector of both Ibadan Polytechnic and Kwara State Polytechnic, among other distinguished roles.

“His extensive contributions to the nation and humanity are a source of pride for his family and friends as we come to terms with this heartbreaking loss.

“The Olunloyo family requests the understanding of the media and the public as they begin preparations for a dignified burial.

“From everlasting to everlasting, He is God.”

Approximately a year ago, in April 2024, rumors regarding the elder statesman’s death circulated across various news outlets.

However, when a correspondent visited his residence in Molete, Ibadan, he refuted the claims, affirming that he was in good health.

“I’m still here, not yet gone,” he stated at that time.

He expressed concern over the rumors, questioning the inevitability of death, and remarked, “Those spreading news of death and the person presumed deceased will all face mortality one day.

“I’ve been fortunate. My father passed away at 42, while my mother lived to 102. I am 89, having surpassed the average life expectancy.”

The elder statesman also recounted how the rumors of his death emerged on June 7, 2022.

He pointed out that the rumor-mongers falsely claimed he had died at the University College Hospital in Ibadan.

Shortly thereafter, the family issued a statement clarifying that he was alive but dealing with age-related health issues, urging Nigerians to pray for his recovery.
