China seeks dialogue with US to resolve trade tensions

On Thursday, China urged for "dialogue" with Washington to address the escalating trade tensions that have led to both nations, the world's two largest economies, imposing numerous tariffs on each other's imports.

He Yongqian, a spokeswoman for the commerce ministry, stated during a weekly press briefing, "China has consistently maintained that both China and the United States should approach their economic and trade differences and disputes with a positive and cooperative mindset."

She emphasized, "It is crucial to note that any form of communication and consultation must be grounded in mutual respect, equality, and shared benefits."

"He added that threats and intimidation are counterproductive. It is hoped that the United States and China will collaborate to return to a constructive path of resolving issues through dialogue and consultation."

Since assuming office in January, US President Donald Trump has implemented tariffs on key trading partners, including China, Canada, and Mexico, citing their inability to control the influx of harmful fentanyl and its precursor chemicals.

Earlier this month, Trump increased a previously imposed 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods to 20 percent.

In retaliation, Beijing has enacted tariffs of up to 15 percent on various US agricultural products, including soybeans, pork, and chicken.

China, recognized as the leading steel producer globally, pledged on Wednesday to implement "all necessary measures" to safeguard its interests in reaction to the recent imposition of new tariffs by the United States on steel and aluminum imports.
