CONMESS: S’West dental consultants begin indefinite strike
On Monday, the Medical and Dental Consultants' Association of Nigeria in the South-West Zone announced that clinical lecturers in universities around the region will be permanently removed from their positions due to their failure to pay the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.
The decision was made after the 21-day ultimatum expired on February 2, according to a statement released by MDCAN in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, and jointly signed by its Chairman, AbdulKareem Salawu, and Secretary, Omotola Obajolowo.
"After reviewing the expiration of an earlier ultimatum issued on January 13, the association agreed on the industrial action," the statement read.
The ultimatum said that clinical lecturers in the area would face industrial action if they did not pay CONMESS.
"Nothing had changed in spite of the ultimatum, and the disparity in payment between clinical lecturers in the region remained unaddressed to what was obtainable in other geopolitical zones.
"We decided to start an indefinite service withdrawal on February 3 until the CONMESS salary structure for clinical lecturers in the area is fully implemented."
In order to avoid a protracted disruption in medical education and healthcare delivery, the association requested pertinent authorities to promptly call on the vice-chancellors of these universities to address the situation.
It underlined the necessity of equity and fairness in clinical lecturers' compensation across the country.
