Court grants Emefiele ₦2 billion bail for 753 Abuja duplexes.

Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on Monday granted bail at ₦2 billion to a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Justice Yusuf granted the bail after Emefiele was arraigned on an eight-count indictment in which he is accused of among others, unlawfully obtaining a housing estate containing 753 units, allegedly stealing and assuming control of billions of naira in proxy accounts.

Emefiele had been given bail in three previous criminal cases that were still pending against him, according to Justice Yusuf's judgment, and there was no proof that he had jumped bail.

Emefiele was instructed by Justice Yusuf to present his travel documents to the court and to complete the bond by Wednesday, failing which he would be placed under remand in custody.

Rotimi Oyedepo, the prosecuting attorney, did not object to the bail application filed by his lawyer, Matthew Burkaa, but urged the court to impose additional restrictions that differed from those previously granted by the other courts.

He then granted him bail with the requirement that he provide two sureties who must be the owners of property within the court's jurisdiction in Asokoro, Maitama, or Wuse 2 valued at ₦2 billion.
