Ember months: Report reckless driving to curb accidents - FRSC to travellers

On Friday, the Federal Road Safety Commission's Plateau State Command called on travellers to report reckless driving in order to accomplish the goal of lowering traffic accidents during the 2024 ember months.

The campaign, called "Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers," began on November 6, 2024, in Jos, the state capital. To raise awareness, there was a press conference, a town hall meeting, flyer distribution and a motorcade funfair.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Maxwell Plateau, the state's Sector Commander for the FRSC, highlighted the necessity of drivers changing their attitude.

Passengers have the right to drive safely, he emphasised, and he urged them to be wary of drivers who break the law.

"We must recognise the selfless services provided by the nation's transportation subsector, which guarantees that people, products, and services are transported to their destinations in a safe manner.

However, in order to maximise safety, we must perform our part with intention. In order to protect our safety, FRSC will therefore step up, improve visibility, respond quickly to rescues, and give enforcement of traffic laws and regulations more seriousness at this crucial time. Passengers, however, have their own responsibilities.

"Travellers can help create a safer ember month time by reporting reckless driving and following traffic safety regulations. Keep in mind that everyone has a responsibility to arrive safely, ” the Sector Commander said.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, who was the Special Guest of Honour, commended the FRSC for the good work it is doing to sanitise the nation’s roads and reduce road traffic crashes and clearance of obstructions on the roads.

Represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Noel Nkup, the governor said he is so much aware of the challenges faced by commuters, considering the state of the roads in the State and assured that very soon there will be positive changes on the roads for people to have safer roads”.

The state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Yakubu Dalyop, said the union would do everything possible to support road safety efforts in the state.

In that regard, he revealed, NUTRW had plotted plans, including the formation of a task group to guarantee that each vehicle loading at their parks is thoroughly inspected and that the tires are suitable for the trip.

"Overloading will not be permitted in any vehicle. The passenger manifest must be filled out by every traveler, he continued.
