FG To Ban Single-Use Plastics, Styrofoam In MDAs

In ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), the federal government plans to outlaw styrofoam and single-use plastic products (SUPs).

At a workshop and capacity building for chemicals and waste handlers held on Tuesday in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, the indication was given by Iziaq Salako, the Minister of State for Environment.

The minister acknowledged the state government's initiative and suggested that one way to counter the threat was to help manufacturers and producers adopt the ideas of chemical management and cleaner production.

The minister took advantage of the opportunity to stress the Federal Government's commitment to doing away with single-use plastics and pleaded with government agencies and offices to follow the new policy.
In order to inform stakeholders about the need of implementing best practices in waste management and chemical handling in order to protect public health and the environment, the Ogun State Ministry of Environment organised the second edition of the Chemical Handlers and Users Workshop.

In addition, among other important stakeholders, the State Executive Council, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, and the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, attended the seminar.

Participants stated that increased non-communicable diseases, contamination of subterranean water, and biodiversity loss have all been brought on by careless handling of waste and chemicals.

In order to ensure more productive output, they demanded that circular solutions be adopted in the fields of waste and chemical management.
