Fight cholera like COVID-19, Lawmaker urges Nigerians

James Faleke, a member of the House of Representatives who represents the Ikeja Federal Constituency, has urged Nigerians to address the cholera outbreak in certain regions of the nation with the same seriousness as they did the coronavirus pandemic.

Faleke made the suggestion during a Monday interview in Lagos State with the News Agency of Nigeria.

According to NAN, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control recently said that 53 cholera-related deaths had been documented in the nation.

Additionally, the National Emergency Operation Centre for cholera has been activated by the Federal Government, according to Dr. Jide Idris, Director-General of the NCDC.

According to Idris, "as of June 24, 2024, there had been 53 recorded deaths and 1,528 suspected cases reported across 31 states and 107 LGAs, with a case fatality rate of 3.5 percent since the year's beginning."

Faleke responded by saying that more should be done by Nigerians to stop the cholera outbreak.
"Every Nigerian needs to be cautious; our attitude towards cleanliness matters," he declared. We need to treat this cholera outbreak with the same seriousness as we did with COVID-19.Many individuals have died from cholera. We anticipated that there wouldn't be a cholera outbreak in Nigeria in this day and age.

But since it has arrived, we must address it. Individuals ought to exercise greater caution in what they consume.

There are lots of phoney goods on the market. Give up using phoney goods. Take pure water; you don't need to drink anything," he said.

In order to prevent cholera and other water- and airborne illnesses, the Lagos State Government on Sunday encouraged public employees to practise proper hygiene through Sunkanmi Oyegbola, Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office.
